The conviction in the hush money trial is likely to cost the ex-US President his firearms license. Two of his three registered pistols have been with the police for a long time.
The New York police are preparing to revoke former US President Donald Trump's gun license, as CNN and NBC report, citing the authority. The reason is Trump's conviction in the hush money trial on 34 counts. Convicted felons are not allowed to own firearms in the United States.
Already after his indictment, Trump's permit to carry concealed weapons was suspended, according to CNN. Two of the three pistols he was allowed to carry were handed over to the New York Police Department at the time, according to a high-ranking police officer. A third weapon on Trump's firearms license was legally brought to Florida.
The authority's current investigations are therefore expected to end with the revocation of the firearms license. Trump could challenge this. According to multiple law enforcement sources, he has held his firearms license for more than a decade. Trump representatives declined to comment on inquiries from the two networks. As a former president, Trump enjoys round-the-clock security from the Secret Service.
Gun nuts should vote for Trump
In May, Trump gave a speech at the annual meeting of the gun lobby group NRA, which supports the presumptive presidential candidate. In his speech, Trump called for people to vote.
Trump is the first former US president to be convicted. The sentence is to be announced on July 11th. A few days later, Trump will be nominated as a presidential candidate again at the US Republican Party Convention. The public prosecutor's office has not yet announced whether it is seeking a prison sentence; a fine is also possible. Trump wants to appeal the verdict.
