Plant a coup of state? According to the general prosecutor's office, the answer is clear. She now wants to bring the ex-president and many of his faithful to court.
The Brazilian Attorney General has charged charges against former President Jair Bolsonaro. The politician, who ruled from 2019 to 2022, is accused of an attempted coup d'état after his deselection. The law enforcement agency is thus followed by the recommendation of the Brazilian federal police, which had been investigating the right head of ex-state for years. Bolsonaro has always rejected the allegations against himself.
In addition to the former president, charges against 33 other people were charged. The Supreme Court must check the allegations. If he accepts it as the basis of a formal indictment, Bolsonaro will be brought to court. The politician is currently at large. It is unlikely that he will be arrested before the process.
According to the investigators, the ex-military Bolsonaro planned a coup together with allies in a criminal association to stick to power against the later swearing-in and still incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in October 2022. On January 8, 2023, followers Bolsonaros, who did not want to recognize Lula's election, stormed the congress, seat of government and the Supreme Court in the capital Brasília and caused considerable damage.
The police accuse a total of 40 people of complicity, but apparently there was not sufficient evidence or evidence of an indictment. Groups with a clear division of tasks were formed, including one for disinformation and attacks on the electoral system and another who was responsible for the “incorporation of the military to the state coup”.
Former Minister of Defense arrested
In addition to the former president, the former general and head of the cabinet for institutional security under Bolsonaro, Augusto Heleno, as well as ex-defense minister Braga Netto and the former president of the Brazilian secret service, Alexandre Ramagem, were also involved. They are accused of efforts to abolish the democratic constitutional state, the planning of a coup of state and the formation of a criminal association.
Braga Netto was arrested in December because, according to the police, he is said to have hindered the investigators when collecting evidence. It is said to have been the driving force behind the planning of the coup d'état and, as Minister of Defense, supported officers and commanders in this purpose to carry out this plan.
A number of procedures run against Bolsonaro. The police also accuse him of illegally sold jewelry and luxury watches, which he had received in his term as an official guest gift in Saudi Arabia. Bolsonaro always rejected this. In addition, according to the investigators, he had vaccination passes for himself, family members and employees for falsifying himself during the Corona passemy.
