Shortly before Scholz's government statement, activists are demanding clear language from the Chancellor regarding climate change. As before at the SPD headquarters, they also left their demands on the walls of the government headquarters. The reason is the hunger strike of other activists.
In the morning, activists from the Last Generation group said the words “Be honest!” written on the north facade of the Federal Chancellery. According to the Berlin police, nine people were involved in the operation.
According to the activists, the message is aimed at Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who made a government statement in the Bundestag on the “current security situation” that morning. In a statement, the Last Generation “urgedly” asked the Chancellor to address the fact that the climate catastrophe “acutely” threatens security and life.
The police initiated investigations into property damage and violations of the Freedom of Assembly Act. According to a police spokesman, the activists had posters with them, but a meeting was not registered. Two of the activists painted the slogan on the wall with a brush and black paint. The operation was ended shortly before 10 a.m. and the slogan was removed with a high-pressure cleaner.
According to its own information, the group had already posted the demand on Tuesday and Wednesday on the facade of the Willy Brandt House, where the SPD federal party headquarters is located. The action was a reaction to the announcement by two hunger strikers that they no longer wanted to drink.
Climate activists from the “Hunger until you are honest” campaign have been going on a hunger strike for weeks to persuade Scholz to publicly announce that the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is already too high and that there is no CO2 budget left.
