After coming to power again in August 2021, the Taliban are reintroducing public punishments in Afghanistan. The Islamists are now having 14 women and 49 men whipped in a stadium in the presence of residents.
A court in the central Afghan province of Sar-i Pul has publicly flogged 63 people in a stadium. The Supreme Court of the Islamist Taliban ruling in the country announced this on Tuesday. The 14 women and 49 men are accused of, among other things, alleged homosexual acts, theft and other “moral crimes”.
The punishment was carried out on Tuesday in the presence of local Taliban representatives and residents. The Taliban reintroduced public punishments, including executions and flogging for crimes such as murder, robbery and adultery, after returning to power in Afghanistan in August 2021, despite criticism from human rights organizations and the United Nations.
Since then, five men convicted of murder have been publicly executed. Last March, Taliban supreme leader Haibatullah Akhundsada promised the full introduction of Sharia law in Afghanistan. In an audio message, he specifically mentioned punishments for adultery such as stoning and public flogging.
